[edit] August 31

I woke up the next morning feeling somewhat better. At least I wasn't feverish. Out the window of our hotel in Reno I saw the moon setting.

Around 8:30am we checked out of the hotel and were on the road to BRC. The drive took about two hours. It's deceptive, at least for me; I tend to think of Reno as 'almost there.'

We had no problems claiming our tickets at the will call. (Last year someone fraudulently claimed my tickets, but the ticket counter verified my identity and was very cool about giving me my ticket anyway.)

We gradually made our way to Shangri-La Village. It's a slow, relaxing drive. 5mph gives you time to look around. The gate to SLV was at 6:30 and Mercury, but our camp faced in towards Venus. We had no problem finding our little chunk of land. We pulled in and parked the truck. We'd made it! Yeah, it was three days later than last year... but I didn't care.

Unpacking and camp-building commenced.

I took a little break from all the construction to climb on the geodesic structure known as PolyWomb. Took a few pictures from up on high.

Evening. These two shots of the Massage Confessional are actually after sunset... the camera exposure makes it seem otherwise. I wanted pictures of it lit with spotlights. The lantern behind the Diyafa structure makes for a really cool eerie glow.

After a solid day of setting up our theme camp, Heather and I were dog tired. But we wanted to go exploring! So we decided to take a little walk along the playa arcing from 6:30 towards 10:00. I really wanted her to get a sense of the city coming alive at night.

The night air was amazingly warm! Definitely the warmest night I'd ever experienced on the playa. The thick, three-layer fur gallibiya was not going to be necessary tonight. I put my bandana and goggles in the hydration pack as a precaution, but we couldn't find Heather's. We took off anyway.

Next day: September 1...
